Staff Sergeant Smith was born and raised in Tifton, Georgia. He graduated from Tift County High School in May 2007. After high school he took a semester of community college at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College before enlisting into the United States Marine Corps in January 2008. Meritoriously promoted to Private First Class (PFC), he graduated recruit training in April and reported to the School of Infantry, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for Marine Combat Training (MCT). After successful completion of MCT, PFC Smith reported to Marine Aviation Training Support Group 21 (MATSG-21), Pensacola, Florida for training as a 7251 Air Traffic Controller (ATC) trainee. Recognized as an honor graduate, PFC Smith was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal and graduated from ATC School in 2008.
In September 2008, Lance Corporal Smith reported for duty to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (H&HS) aboard Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, California. After five months of On-the-Job training, Lance Corporal Smith received his Primary Military Occupational Specialty 7257, Air Traffic Controller. In April 2009 he augmented Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course (WTI 2-09) Yuma, Arizona. After returning from WTI Lance Corporal Smith was promoted to Corporal in May 2009. In April of 2010 Corporal Smith qualified as a Certified Tower Operator (CTO) and became a 7252. Corporal Smith was promoted to Sergeant in July 2010.
In the summer of 2010 Sergeant Smith reported to Marine Air Control Squadron 1 Detachment Bravo (MACS-1 DET B) in Miramar, California. After augmenting Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course (WTI 1-11) in October 2010 and Enhanced Mojave Viper in Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) Twentynine Palms, California in January 2011, Sergeant Smith executed a change of operational (CHOP) command to Marine Air Control Group 38(MACG-38) Detachment in Camp Pendleton, California. From MACG-38 Detachment, Sergeant Smith deployed with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 268(HMLA-268) with the Aviation Command Element of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit on the USS Makin Island in November 2011. After returning from deployment in June 2012, Sergeant Smith returned to MACS-1 Det B.
In August 2013 Sergeant Smith reported to his present command Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. After being selected for Staff Sergeant
in September 2013, Sergeant Smith was promoted to his present rank in June 2014.
