Major Schmitz was the ATC Facility Officer from 11 May 12 to 13 Jun 14.

Maj Schmitz enlisted in the Marine Corps and reported to MCRD San Diego on 21 January 1997. After Boot Camp and Marine Combat Training, he reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for the Aviation Support Equipment Technicians Course and then to a follow-on Support Equipment course at North Island, CA.

In March of 1998, he reported to MCAS Beaufort, SC and served in Marine Aviation and Logistics Squadron (MALS) 31 and was subsequently transferred to VMFA (AW) 533 under the Fleet Assistance Program (FAP) in July of 1998.

During his tour at VMFA (AW) 533, he deployed to both Iwakuni and Okinawa, Japan and was ultimately recognized as the squadron’s 1998 “Marine of the Year” and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal. In January 1999, the squadron deployed to Korat, Thailand and participated in the “Cope Tiger” exercise. Shortly after the squadron’s return to MCAS Beaufort, it deployed again in May of 1999 to Taszar, Hungary to participate in Operation NOBLE ANVIL and Operation ALLIED FORCE.

In July of 1999, he returned to MALS-31 and performed duties as a Ground Support Equipment (GSE) electrician. He attended Corporal’s Leadership School in July of 2000, completing the course as the class Honor Graduate. In September of 2000, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

In November of 2001, he received orders to Marine Wing Support Squadron (MWSS) 374 aboard Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, CA. He continued to serve as a GSE electrician and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Chapman University in June of 2003. In October, he attended Officer Candidate School under the Enlisted Commissioning Program (ECP) and was commissioned in December of that year.

After The Basic School, he attended Air Traffic Control (ATC) School in Pensacola and was then assigned to Marine Air Control Squadron (MACS) 4 Detachment B, followed by FAP orders to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan in January 2005 where he served as an ATC Crew Officer. In November of 2005, he was assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and served as the Marine Air Traffic Control Mobile Team (MMT) OIC under HMM-262. He was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant in December of 2005 and subsequently supported Humanitarian Assistance operations in Leyte, Philippines in March of 2006.

In June of 2006, he returned to Iwakuni and served as the Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron Assistant ATC Facility Officer until December of 2007.

In January 2008, he was assigned duties as the Officer Selection Officer in Iowa City, Iowa under the 9th Marine Corps District. In June of 2008 he was promoted to the rank of Captain.

In July of 2010, Maj Schmitz received orders to MACS 2 at MCAS Cherry Point, NC. In September of 2010, he was assigned duties as a Detachment Commander and tasked with standing up the new ATC Detachment D. In August of 2011, he led the Detachment as they deployed to Southern Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM combat operations.

Upon return from a successful deployment, Maj Schmitz received orders to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, MCAS Cherry Point where he served as the ATC Facility Officer. He was promoted to his present rank on 27 Jan 14.
